Shingrix Vaccine for Shingles

Shingles is a painful skin rash, often with blisters. It is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. If you have had chickenpox or the chicken pox vaccine, you may develop shingles later in life.

Shingles usually appears on one side of the face or body and lasts about 2-4 weeks. It is far more common in patients over 50 years of age and the risks increase with age. Patient with weakened immune systems are also more affected due to steroids, chemotherapy or disease.

The vaccine is also recommended for people who have already gotten the live shingles vaccine (Zostavax, which is only 50% effective).

In clinical trials, Shingrix was more than 90% effective in preventing shingles. There is no live virus in the Shingrix vaccine.
